Hierarchy of Lies

Written By: Tuen - Aug• 20•07

The Federal Election for Australia is coming soon; and campaigning and electioneering is happening all around, and you get to read about all this in the papers every day.  Of course, elections in Australia are totally different from elections in Singapore.  There are so many elections a regular citizen gets to take part in, in Australia.  There are local council elections, state government elections and federal government elections.  In Singapore, in my entire 43 years living there, I only took part in ONE general election.  That’s Singapore democracy for you.  My cousin who has lived in Australia for around 5 or 6 years, has taken part in I believe over 4 elections.

Anyway, back to my main point (I always seem to digress into a rant when talking about Singapore).

There have been numerous polls conducted by various research (or otherwise) organisations leading up to the coming federal elections.  And this has led me to a modification of a well known dictum:

There are lies, damned lies, and then there are statistics.

Well, my addendum to it is as follows:

There are lies, damned lies, statistics, and then there are opinion polls.
